In the 1960s, Benjamin Bloom set out a revolutionary vision: mastery learning, the idea that every student can achieve excellence if given the time, the methods and the support suited to their own cognitive characteristics. For decades, that promise remained largely unfulfilled in traditional classrooms, where dedicated teachers ran up against the practical impossibility of personalizing instruction for large, heterogeneous classes.
The Roots of the Project: Book in Progress
Our story begins with Book in Progress, a national network of Italian schools coordinated by IISS “E. Majorana” in Brindisi. For years, this community of educators has been producing innovative teaching materials that replace traditional textbooks, achieving two fundamental results: improving the quality of learning and drastically reducing costs for families.
Book in Progress AI is the natural evolution of this experience: it puts artificial intelligence at the service of personalized education.

Imagine a system that observes how you learn and adapts accordingly. Genius mode continuously analyzes your interactions with the content and builds a personalized cognitive profile. Forget surprise oral tests and performance anxiety. Our system weaves natural micro-assessments into the learning path, giving you constant, constructive feedback. The aim is not to judge you but to guide you: to identify where you are strong, where you can improve, and to suggest the best path to fill any gaps. Multilingual authoring system – Teachers as creators
For teachers, we offer professional tools that respect their pedagogical creativity. Creating personalized content becomes quick and easy, with support for several languages and detailed analytics showing how students interact with the materials. All in full respect of privacy: personal data remain protected and under the school’s control.
Technology at the Service of Privacy
Book in Progress AI uses a hybrid architecture designed to maximize both performance and security. Teaching content is delivered through the cloud to guarantee accessibility and speed, while all sensitive student data remain on on-premise servers controlled by the schools.
We use interchangeable open-source language models, guaranteeing independence from proprietary vendors and transparency about how the artificial intelligence works. Advanced encryption protects every piece of information, because we believe educational innovation must never compromise young people’s privacy.

category at the Global Schools Prize
IISS Ettore Majorana in Brindisi is the winner of the AI Transformation category of the Global Schools Prize 2026, the global prize worth $1 million promoted by the Varkey Foundation, which celebrates the world’s most innovative schools in redefining the learning of the future. Selected from almost 3,000 applications from 113 countries, we were among the 10 finalist schools representing the best of global education.

The overall winner of the $1M Global Schools Prize was announced at the Education World Forum: the prize went to theAlsama Project, the refugee-led network of Lebanese schools that provides education to young people affected by war in the refugee camps of Beirut and Homs. We remain proud to have been the only Italian representatives among the 10 global finalists and to have won the AI Transformation category.
This international recognition is the fruit of the daily work of the teachers, students and families of IISS Majorana. We were theonly Italian school among the 10 category winners, and we proudly carry the name of Brindisi and of Southern Italy onto the stage of global educational innovation.
